Directions - : From Boulder; West on Canyon Boulevard (Colorado Highway 119) to town of Nederland. From Nederland, take Highway 72 (Peak-to-Peak Highway) toward Ward for 7.5 miles until seeing sign for the University of Colorado Research Station on the right. Turn left immediately after the sign onto Country Road 116 and drive another 0.5 mile. The trail starts right by the gate.
Description -
Colorado backcountry ride so be prepared. It’s starts at 8,600ft and tops out at 10,200ft. The ride starts with a 600 ft climb that is steep, loose, rocky and technical. Luckily they believe in switchbacks that help some, but it’s a hard climb to start a ride. After the nasty climb, the terrain is diverse with some rolling and some steep technical climbs. There are a lot of rocks that beat you up after awhile especially when you’re at 9,000 – 10,000ft! The last climb towards the Wapiti trail junction is very, very rocky. Hard to keep your momentum going and breathe at the same time. The entire first half of the ride is climbing which means that once you summit you can pretty much coast back to the car. We didn’t have much fun on this ride, but this was our final ride of the trip and we had ridden too many long hard days in a row at altitude.

Loops -
Start ride at the gate at the entrance to Peaceful Valley and start climbing the Buchanan Pass/Sourdough Trail. At the junction stay left on the Sourdough Trail (#835). Cont on the trail, it is well marked, until the junction of the Wapiti/Baptiste Ski Trail. Stay left on Sourdough at this first junction. Once you get to a small pond with awesome views of the Indian Peaks, take at right on the Wapiti/Baptiste Trail. This trail will take you back to the Sourdough. Take a left on the Sourdough and head back to the car.
